About the SPS Caregiver IEP Meeting Survey

The SPS Caregiver IEP Meeting Survey is an anonymous feedback tool designed to help Somerville families share their experiences following Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. By capturing real-time data on meeting clarity, partnership, and communication, we can ensure that every caregiver has a direct voice in shaping the special education process.

Why this matters

Research consistently shows that when families, schools, and communities work together, student outcomes improve. This survey turns that research into action by measuring whether:

  • Caregivers are treated as equal and valued members of the IEP Team.

  • Parent/caregiver input is meaningfully incorporated into the development of the IEP.

  • Teams share the data and observations that drive decisions regarding goals and services.

Origins of the project

This survey was developed during the 2025-2026 school year as a core project of the APPLE Institute (Advancing Parent & Professional Leadership Education). Sponsored by the Federation for Children with Special Needs, the Somerville APPLE Team brought together a collaborative group of SEPAC members, district special education leaders, and community partners to practice shared power and visible follow-through.

Tracking our progress

To maintain transparency, we have developed a Live Data Dashboard that summarizes the survey results. We review this data monthly during the school year to identify recurring themes and specific action steps to improve the experience for all Somerville families.
