Summer Recap

It was amazing watching our Special Needs children learn how to ride bikes in just a few short but powerful days! Skilled educators from iCanShine, supported by Somerville Parks & Recreation staff gave these kiddos a gift of a lifelong skill.

We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to making this project happen – from funding, to advertising, to making sure kids had the right bikes, to the folks who showed up that week to make it happen. So many forces came together for one common cause: Somerville Recreation, Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Kiwanis Club of Somerville, and the Cambria Boston-Somerville Hotel.

Students who qualified for ESY services attended the District’s first daily program, where students received instruction in reading, writing, and math. This program was created by the Special Education Department based on direct feedback from Special Needs families. We thank the department for listening and acting on our concerns.
